Rudolf (1270 – 1290). Duke of Austria (r. 1282–1283). Married Agnes in 1289. Co-Duke of Austria and Styria; predeceased his father Rudolf I. Born at Rheinfelden in Swabia, he was the youngest of King Rudolf's sons by Gertrude of Hohenberg to live past infancy. Vested jointly with his brother Albert in 1282, he held the Austrian and Styrian duchies barely a year before the Treaty of Rheinfelden obliged him to surrender his share to his elder brother. As compensation he was promised the German crown one day and given the style of “Duke of Swabia” — an empty dignity by then, the old duchy having never recovered from the death of its last Hohenstaufen holder, the boy Conradin, in 1268.
