Albert (1298 – 1358). Duke of Austria (r. 1330–1358). Married Joanna in 1324. 'the Wise'; Duke of Austria, Styria and Carinthia. Also remembered as “the Lame,” he was first meant for the Church: elected Bishop of Passau in 1313 while still a minor, he faced a rival claimant and renounced the office in 1317. Power came instead through inheritance and patience. On the death of his elder brother Frederick the Fair in 1330 he took up joint rule with his brother Otto, added the Alsatian county of Pfirt through his wife’s inheritance, and when his maternal uncle Duke Henry of Carinthia died in 1335 he made good the Habsburg claim to Carinthia and the march of Carniola.
