Albert (1349 – 1395). Duke of Austria (r. 1365–1395). Married Elisabeth in 1366. Married Beatrice in 1375. 'with the Pigtail'; founder of the Albertinian line. Third son of Duke Albert II, he was subject to his father’s house law directing that the brothers share power equally, though the eldest, Rudolf IV, at first held the reins alone. In 1365 he set his name beside Rudolf’s and Leopold’s on the founding charter of the University of Vienna; within months Rudolf was dead at twenty-five, and — Frederick, the second son, having died three years earlier — the government fell to Albert, who exercised it together with the youngest brother, Leopold III, the pair receiving their duchies in fief from Emperor Charles IV.
