Portrait of Albert IV, Duke of Austria

Albert (1377 – 1404). Duke of Austria (r. 1395–1404). Married Joanna Sophia in 1390. Duke of Lower/Albertinian Austria. In the family’s division of the Habsburg lands his share corresponded, in modern terms, to Lower Austria and much of Upper Austria, the remainder being held by his Leopoldian cousins — and his rule passed largely in disputes, with that rival branch and with Wenceslaus and Sigismund of the House of Luxembourg alike. On his mother’s side he could trace descent from the Babenbergs, Austria’s earlier ducal house. He died at Klosterneuburg and lies in the Ducal Crypt of the Stephansdom in Vienna.
