Albert (1397 – 1439). King of the Romans (r. 1438–1439). Married Elizabeth in 1422. Albert V of Austria; also King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia; never crowned emperor. Duke at seven on his father’s death, he grew into a soldier of the Hussite Wars, fighting alongside his father-in-law Sigismund and taking a hard defeat at Domažlice in 1431. Crowned in Hungary in 1438, he never firmly grasped Bohemia, contending with Polish-Bohemian forces, and died the next year while defending Hungary against the Ottomans. His rule carried a darker mark as well: he persecuted Hussites, and pressed Austria’s Jews with ever-new taxes before destroying the Viennese community outright — imprisonment, forced conversion and expulsion, and in 1421 more than two hundred people burned at the stake outside the city walls.
