Frederick (1289 – 1330). King of the Romans (r. 1314–1330). Married Isabella in 1315. Co-Duke of Austria 1308–1330; contested the German kingship with Louis IV of Bavaria. When his father was assassinated in 1308, Frederick took charge of the Austrian and Styrian duchies for himself and his younger brothers — but the German crown his father and grandfather had worn slipped away, passing to Henry VII of Luxembourg in an election steered by the Archbishop of Mainz, a fierce enemy of the late king; Frederick was even made to renounce all claim to it. He revived the ambition in 1314, standing as anti-king of Germany until 1325 and thereafter as co-king until his death.
