Leopold (1290 – 1326). Duke of Austria (r. 1308–1326). Married Catherine in 1315. 'the Glorious'; co-Duke of Austria and Styria with his brother Frederick the Fair. After his father’s assassination in 1308 he took over the administration of Further Austria and opened a campaign of retribution against the murderers. Drawing close to the House of Luxembourg, he rode with King Henry VII into Italy, helping to crush a Guelph rising in Milan in 1311 and to besiege Brescia. He then threw his weight behind his brother Frederick’s bid for the German throne in 1314; the Habsburgs mustered only four electoral votes against five for Louis of Bavaria, and in the armed conflict that followed Leopold’s forces fought on for his brother’s claim.
