Eleanor (1498 – 1558). Consort. Married Francis in 1530. Married Manuel in 1518. Eldest sister of Charles V; Queen of Portugal by Manuel I, then Queen of France by Francis I. Born at Leuven, she was brought up after her father’s death at the Mechelen court of her aunt Margaret of Austria. A proposed match with the future Henry VIII came to nothing, and in 1517 her brother Charles expelled the Elector Palatine Frederick from court after catching her reading his love letter. Charles then married her to their uncle Manuel of Portugal — already widowed by two of her aunts — to deny Castilian rebels any Portuguese help; of their two children only Maria survived infancy. Betrothed to Francis I while he was her brother’s captive, she married him under the Treaty of Cambrai, but he openly preferred his mistress Anne de Pisseleu. Though without political power, she acted as a go-between with the emperor. Settling in Spain near Charles’s retreat at Yuste, she died in 1558 returning from Badajoz, where she had seen Maria for the first time in 28 years.
