Ernest (1377 – 1424). Duke of Austria (r. 1406–1424). Married Margaret in 1392. Married Cymburgis in 1412. 'the Iron'; Duke of Inner Austria; with Cymburgis, ancestor of all later Habsburg emperors. A son of Leopold III and Viridis Visconti, daughter of the lord of Milan, he was a child when his father fell at Sempach in 1386, and grew up with his brothers under the guardianship of their uncle Albert III. The Treaty of Neuberg of 1379 had assigned his branch the Inner Austrian lands, and Styria, Carinthia and Carniola came to him in 1406 on the death of his eldest brother William. He campaigned in Italy with King Rupert of Germany in 1401, and from 1411 stood at the head of the whole Leopoldian line.
