Frederick (1382 – 1439). Duke of Austria (r. 1406–1439). Married Anna in 1411. 'of the Empty Pockets'; Count of Tyrol and Duke of Further Austria. The youngest of Duke Leopold III’s sons, he lost his father in battle at Sempach in 1386 and spent his boyhood in the care of his uncle Albert III. Albert’s death in 1395 set the brothers quarrelling over the inheritance, and in the division that followed William came to rule Inner Austria and Leopold IV Tyrol, while Frederick, once he came of age in 1402, was given the family’s scattered Swabian possessions known as Further Austria.
