Sigismund (1427 – 1496). Archduke of Austria (r. 1446–1490). Married Eleanor in 1449. Married Catherine in 1484. Count of Tyrol and Further Austria; died without legitimate issue; ceded rule to Maximilian I. Born at the Tyrolean court in Innsbruck, he was still a minor when his father died, and his cousin Frederick — soon elected King of the Romans — held the regency until 1446, drawing revenue from the Tyrolean mines and stretching his influence over the Further Austrian lands until the Tyrolean nobles pressed him to hand over the rule. Sigismund’s own dignity rose with the family’s fortunes: duke from 1439, he was elevated to archduke in 1477.
