Margaret (1480 – 1530). Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands (r. 1519–1530). Married John in 1497. Married Philibert in 1501. Daughter of Maximilian I; twice widowed; able Regent who raised the future Charles V. Raised at the French court as the future bride of Charles VIII, she was jilted when he chose Anne of Brittany instead — a slight she never forgave the House of Valois. After Philibert's death she had his heart embalmed to keep beside her and began building the lavish Royal Monastery of Brou in Bresse to house his tomb and, eventually, her own. Named governor of the Low Countries and guardian of her brother's children in 1507, she became the first of a long line of female regents in the Netherlands, serving first her father Maximilian and then Charles V, and refusing a proposed remarriage to the ageing Henry VII of England.
