Mary (1457 – 1482). Duchess of Burgundy (r. 1477–1482). Married Maximilian in 1477. Suo jure heiress of Charles the Bold; her 1477 marriage brought Burgundy and the Netherlands to the Habsburgs; died in a riding accident. Nicknamed “the Rich,” she was nineteen when her father fell at the Battle of Nancy and the whole Burgundian inheritance came down to her, several domains accepting her at once as their ruler. Her effective government ran over most of the Burgundian Netherlands, but her cousin King Louis XI of France refused to recognize her claims and moved swiftly to seize a swathe of the inheritance — the Duchy of Burgundy, the Free County, and other lands both within France and the Holy Roman Empire — which she went on claiming nonetheless.
