Philip (1578 – 1621). King of Spain (r. 1598–1621). Married Margaret in 1599. Son of Philip II and his niece Anna of Austria. Under the Iberian Union he reigned over Portugal as well, styled Philip II there, and held Naples, Sicily, Milan, and the Seventeen Provinces besides. Almost at once he handed the daily business of government to a favourite, the Duke of Lerma, whose influence colours the whole reign. His years brought a rare quiet to Western Europe — some historians call it the Pax Hispanica — including a truce with the Dutch from 1609, though Spain entered the Thirty Years’ War with early success before his death. At home he was “Philip the Pious”; abroad his reputation has fared worse, and many trace the empire’s slow decline to the economic troubles that opened his reign.
