Margaret of Austria, Queen of Spain
1584 – 1611 · Generation XI · Consort · Austrian Habsburgs
Margaret (1584 – 1611). Consort. Married Philip in 1599. Wife of Philip III and his cousin; daughter of Charles II, Archduke of Austria. Maria Anna of Bavaria was her mother. Of her siblings, Ferdinand rose to the imperial throne in 1619, while Anna and Constance each married Sigismund III of Poland in turn. At court her influence grew; the king was warmly attached to her and paid her still more attention once she bore him a son in 1605. Pious, a patron of the arts and thought by contemporaries astute in politics, she joined the dowager Empress Maria and the nun Archduchess Margaret in a circle that urged Spain to act as a Catholic power and stand by the Austrian Habsburgs. She fought constantly against the influence of the Duke of Lerma, whom she thought corrupt, though he fell only years after her death. Of her eight children, Anne became Queen of France and Maria Anna empress. She died giving birth to Alfonso; Philip never remarried.
