Anna (1549 – 1580). Consort. Married Philip in 1570. Fourth wife and niece of Philip II; daughter of his sister Maria of Austria and Maximilian II; mother of Philip III. Though Spanish-born, in her grandfather Charles V’s reign, she grew up in Vienna from the age of four and was reputedly her father’s favourite child. She was first considered for her cousin Don Carlos, but his death in 1568 — and that of Philip’s third wife the same year — turned the plan toward the widowed king himself, who needed a male heir; Pope Pius V was among those who objected. Married by proxy in May 1570, she travelled to Spain with her brothers Albert and Wenceslaus. Her cheerful manner eased the stiffness of the Spanish court, and diplomats reported the king in love with his young bride. Of her five children only the future Philip III reached adulthood. She died of influenza at Badajoz, where the court had moved while Philip pressed his claim to Portugal, and was later reburied at El Escorial.
