Portrait of Princess Maria Annunciata of Bourbon-Two Sicilies

Maria Annunciata (1843 – 1871). Consort. Married Karl Ludwig in 1862. Second wife of Karl Ludwig; mother of Franz Ferdinand and Archduke Otto. Born at the palace of Caserta, the eldest daughter among the twelve children of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and Archduchess Maria Theresa, she was “Ciolla” to her family and remembered as calm, modest and reserved. In 1860 Garibaldi’s Expedition of the Thousand toppled her brother Francis, and the family took refuge in Rome, first at the Quirinal Palace with Pope Pius IX and then at the Palazzo Farnese. She was married there by proxy in October 1862, with the wedding itself in Venice. A seizure at mass the day after raised fears for her health, and she was later found to have tuberculosis, which she played down, still attending balls, theatre and opera; she bore four children despite it. Gravely ill after her last child’s birth in 1870, she died at twenty-eight; Karl Ludwig named the first daughter of his next marriage after her.
