Karl Ludwig (1833 – 1896). Archduke. Married Maria Annunciata in 1862. Brother of Franz Joseph; father of Franz Ferdinand and of Otto, grandfather of Emperor Charles I. Born at Schönbrunn to Archduke Franz Karl and Sophie of Bavaria, he received a devout Catholic upbringing under the prince-archbishop Joseph Othmar Rauscher. Uninterested in politics, he still served in the Galician government and from 1855 governed Tyrol from Ambras Castle, until — finding his authority hemmed in by the cabinet in Vienna — he gave up the post when the February Patent was issued in 1861 and turned to patronage of the arts and sciences. He married three times: his cousin Margaretha of Saxony died childless in 1858; Maria Annunziata of the Two Sicilies bore him four children before her death in 1871; and Maria Theresa of Portugal gave him two daughters. Rudolf’s death in 1889 made him heir presumptive, and a newspaper claim that he had stood aside for Franz Ferdinand proved false. He died of typhoid after a journey to Palestine and Egypt, reputedly from drinking Jordan water.
