Leopold (1640 – 1705). Holy Roman Emperor (r. 1658–1705). Married Claudia Felicitas in 1673. Married Eleonore Magdalene in 1676. Married Margaret Theresa in 1666 — a match across the generations. Son of Ferdinand III and Maria Anna of Spain; married his niece Margaret Theresa. Elected emperor over the opposition of Cardinal Mazarin’s France, he ruled for nearly forty-seven years — the second-longest reign of any Habsburg emperor — locked in lifelong rivalry with his cousin Louis XIV. Against the Ottomans he prevailed: after the Great Turkish War, the Treaty of Karlowitz restored to him almost all of Hungary, lost since Mohács, much of it owed to the generalship of Prince Eugene of Savoy. Against France he fought three wars, the last begun when he claimed the whole Spanish inheritance for his younger son Charles. First set on a career in the Church, he remained deeply pious all his life — and he wrote music of his own, filling his court with composers he generously supported.
