Portrait of Maria Anna of Austria

Maria Anna (1683 – 1754). Consort. Daughter of Leopold I; married John V of Portugal. Born in Linz, the eleventh child of Leopold I and his third wife, Eleonor Magdalene of Neuburg, she was a sister of the future emperors Joseph and Charles and, through Charles, an aunt of Maria Theresa. Her marriage in October 1708 was a War of the Spanish Succession pact, binding Portugal to Austria against France and Spain; the couple were first cousins, their mothers being sisters. As queen she remodelled court custom on the pattern of earlier Portuguese queens, widening the separation of the sexes and of servants from masters. Like her husband she loved display, gathering nobles from across the kingdom for celebrations lasting several days. When a stroke left John partly paralysed in 1742 she governed as regent until his death in 1750. Four of their six children survived infancy. She died at Belém Palace in 1754; her body lies in Lisbon, her heart in Vienna’s Imperial Crypt.
