Mariana (1634 – 1696). Consort. Married Philip in 1649. Second wife and niece of Philip IV; daughter of his sister Maria Anna of Spain and Ferdinand III; regent for Charles II. Born at Wiener Neustadt, she had first been promised in 1646 to Philip’s son Balthasar Charles; his early death left her without a groom and the king without an heir, and the wedding to her uncle followed at Navalcarnero in 1649. Of five children only two grew up, Margaret Theresa and the ailing Charles. Named regent in 1665 when he was three, she governed through favourites — her Jesuit confessor Juan Everardo Nithard, then Valenzuela of her household — against a pro-French party led by Charles’s half-brother John of Austria, who took power in 1677. After John’s death in 1679 she was regent again and later chose Maria Anna of Neuburg as her son’s second bride. Velázquez painted her full-length, and in 1668 she approved the Jesuit mission to the Pacific islands renamed the Marianas in her honour. She died in Madrid in 1696, probably of breast cancer.
