Pandora has no mother or father: she was shaped from clay by Hephaestus on Zeus's orders, and every god added a gift — beauty, craft, charm, and a deceitful heart — to make the first woman. Given to Epimetheus as a bride, she lifted the lid of the great jar and let sorrows fly out into the world, leaving only Hope caught beneath the rim. Not born of any union: fashioned from clay by Hephaestus at Zeus's command as the first woman.
