Agrippina the Younger

Agrippina (AD 15 – AD 59). Married Gnaeus Domitius around AD 28. One of their children is recorded in this archive. Sister of one emperor, wife of another, mother of a third — Nero, who finally had her killed. Born on the Rhine, probably at the outpost that became Cologne, she was married at thirteen by Tiberius’s arrangement; Nero, born in AD 37, was her only child. Implicated in a plot against her brother Caligula in AD 39, she was exiled to the Pontine Islands and her possessions sold, until Claudius recalled her. After a second marriage, to the wealthy Passienus Crispus, she wed her uncle Claudius on New Year’s Day AD 49, despite the taint of incest. As Augusta she sat beside him in public, appeared on the coinage, saw Cologne named for her and had Nero adopted as heir ahead of Britannicus. Ancient writers accused her of poisoning Claudius with mushrooms in AD 54, though he may simply have died at sixty-three. Her hold on her son slipped within a year; after a collapsing boat failed to drown her, his agents killed her at her villa.
