Galla (AD 392 – AD 450). Married Constantius III around AD 417. One of their children is recorded in this archive. Captive of the Goths, queen of their king, then empress-regent of the West for her son; the mausoleum in Ravenna that bears her name never held her body. Raised in the household of the general Stilicho and his wife Serena, she was betrothed to their son Eucherius, who was killed after his father’s fall in 408. Taken by Alaric before the sack of Rome, she travelled with the Visigoths into Gaul and in 414 married their king Ataulf at Narbonne; their infant son Theodosius soon died, and after Ataulf’s murder in 415 she was driven on foot among the captives of his successor. Handed back to Honorius under a treaty, she was made to marry Constantius in 417 and became Augusta when he briefly shared the throne in 421. A quarrel with Honorius sent her to Constantinople, and eastern armies installed her son Valentinian III in 425. She governed as regent until 437, increasingly overshadowed by Aetius. She died in Rome in 450 and was buried in the Theodosian family mausoleum beside Old St Peter’s.
