Theodosius I (AD 347 – AD 395). Roman emperor (r. AD 379–395). Married Aelia around AD 376. Married Galla around AD 387. The last man to rule the whole empire; made Nicene Christianity the state religion and left the world divided between his sons. Handed the East in the wreckage after Adrianople, he rebuilt an army by desperate conscription and ended the Gothic War in 382 on terms that favoured the defeated: the Goths settled south of the Danube inside the empire, autonomous and under their own leaders. Peace with Persia followed in 386, the two powers dividing the disputed Armenian kingdom between them. Twice he marched west in civil war — against Magnus Maximus, Gratian's killer, in 388, and against Eugenius in 394, winning in September only months before his death. He convened the council at Constantinople that confirmed the Nicene creed as orthodoxy, and enlarged Constantinople's Forum Tauri until no square of the ancient world surpassed it; historians credit his era with a “Theodosian renaissance” in classical art.
