Arthur Tudor (1486–1502). Married Catherine of Aragon in 1501. The Tudor heir, dead at fifteen; his widow and his title passed to his brother Henry. Born at Winchester — chosen by Henry VII to evoke the legend of King Arthur — he embodied, through his mother Elizabeth of York, the joining of Lancaster and York. Created Prince of Wales in 1489, he was taught history and the classics by Bernard André and Thomas Linacre, and from 1493 kept his household at Ludlow, where his father had set up the Council of Wales and the Marches in his name. The Treaty of Medina del Campo had promised him to Catherine of Aragon before he was three; after years of Latin letters they met in November 1501 and married at St Paul’s ten days later. Both fell ill the next spring, perhaps with the sweating sickness; Catherine recovered, but Arthur died that April and was buried in Worcester Cathedral. Whether their marriage had been consummated became, decades later, the crux of Henry VIII’s case for annulment.
