Louis Mountbatten
1854 – 1921 · Generation XXXV · First Sea Lord
Louis Mountbatten (1854–1921). First Sea Lord. Married Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine in 1884. Born at Graz, the eldest son of Prince Alexander of Hesse and Countess Julia von Hauke, he grew up trilingual in Italy and Hesse, then became a naturalised Briton and joined the Royal Navy at fourteen. Royal-yacht postings and royal tours left his promotions looking unearned, and in 1879 he refused further such duty as harmful to his career. His marriage in 1884 to Victoria of Hesse, a granddaughter of the queen, produced four children, among them Louise, later Queen of Sweden; the couple were also maternal grandparents of Prince Philip. As First Sea Lord from 1912 he joined Churchill in cancelling the fleet’s dispersal on the eve of war, but anti-German feeling forced his resignation in October 1914. In 1917 he gave up his German titles to become Marquess of Milford Haven. He died in London in 1921, soon after a last voyage aboard HMS Repulse.
