Louis Mountbatten
1900 – 1979 · Generation XXXVI · Last Viceroy of India
Louis Mountbatten (1900–1979). Last Viceroy of India. Born at Frogmore House, the younger son of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Victoria of Hesse, “Dickie” was a great-grandson of Queen Victoria and a maternal uncle of Prince Philip. In 1922 he married the heiress Edwina Ashley. In the Second World War he led a destroyer flotilla from HMS Kelly until she was sunk off Crete in 1941 — the basis for Noël Coward’s In Which We Serve — then, as Churchill’s chief of Combined Operations, oversaw the successful Bruneval raid and the disastrous one at Dieppe, before becoming Supreme Allied Commander in South East Asia. After guiding India through independence and partition, and serving as its first governor-general, he became First Sea Lord in 1955 and later Chief of the Defence Staff. A mentor to the future Charles III, he was killed in 1979 when the IRA bombed his fishing boat at Mullaghmore, County Sligo.
