Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine (1863–1950). Married Louis Mountbatten in 1884. 2 of their children are recorded in this archive. Granddaughter of Queen Victoria and grandmother of Prince Philip. Born at Windsor Castle in her grandmother’s presence, she was the eldest daughter of Princess Alice and Louis IV of Hesse. When diphtheria swept the family in 1878, killing her youngest sister, and her mother died weeks later, the fifteen-year-old took on the care of her siblings. She married her father’s cousin, the Royal Navy officer Prince Louis of Battenberg, against her father’s wishes. Widely read and scientifically curious, she drew a geological map of Malta, joined archaeological digs, and taught her younger son Louis herself. In 1917 the couple renounced their German titles and took the name Mountbatten. Her sisters Elisabeth and Alix were murdered in the Russian revolution. Widowed in 1921, she settled at Kensington Palace and took on much of her grandson Philip’s upbringing while his mother was institutionalised. She died there in 1950.
