Kinship

How is Charles III related to Queen Victoria?

He is her great-great-great-grandson twice over — once through his mother’s line of sovereigns, and once through his father’s descent from Victoria’s daughter Alice.

King Charles III and Queen Victoria: great-great-great-grandson

  1. Great-great-great-grandson through Queen Victoria: Alice of the United Kingdom → Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine → Alice of Battenberg → Philip Mountbatten → King Charles III

Charles reaches Victoria by two separate lines, each five generations long. The first is the line of the crown. Victoria’s eldest son reigned as Edward VII; Edward’s son George V, grandson George VI and great-granddaughter Elizabeth II each reigned in their turn, and Charles, Elizabeth’s eldest son, became king at her death in 2022. On this route, every generation between Victoria and Charles wore the crown.

The second line runs through Charles’s father and, above him, through three women in succession. Victoria’s second daughter, Alice, married into the grand-ducal family of Hesse and by Rhine. Alice’s daughter Victoria married Prince Louis of Battenberg, the naval officer who, amid wartime hostility to Germany, dropped his German titles and became a Mountbatten. Their daughter, Alice of Battenberg, married Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, and their son Philip married Elizabeth in 1947. Where the first line stayed on the British throne, this one passed through German and Greek royal families before returning to Britain with Philip.

The doubling comes from the couple themselves: Elizabeth and Philip were third cousins through Victoria and Albert, so their children inherited that descent from both sides — and every route that reaches Victoria here reaches Albert as well. Doubled descents like this grow out of the web of marriages that tied Victoria’s nine children to Europe’s royal houses — the web behind her nickname, “grandmother of Europe”. Charles, born in 1948, is one of the descendants in this archive who carry her twice.
