Andronikos (AD 1400 – 1407). co-emperor (r. 1403–1407). Son of John VII; co-emperor in Thessalonica, died a child. Under the settlement that ended the feud between his father and Manuel II, he stood third in line to Constantinople, and his parents looked on him as a future senior emperor; a carved ivory box commemorating the family’s entry into Thessalonica shows him more prominently than his older cousin John VIII. His death at seven undid those hopes — lamentations were composed for him, his father sank into intense grief, and the metropolitan of Thessalonica sent a letter of consolation. So faint is his trace in the sources that historians long believed John VII childless; the boy emperor was only identified in 1967, from an unpublished funeral oration and that letter.
One of 20 people of Palaiologos (1190–1503) in this archive. The last and longest-lived house — it retook the city in 1261 and lost it in 1453.
