Portrait of Constantine

Constantine (AD 833 – 835). co-emperor (r. 835). Died in infancy. Crowned beside his father Theophilos of the Amorian dynasty while still an infant, Constantine reigned only on parchment and coin: gold pieces style him despot, bronze ones give him no title at all, and the chronology of his birth, coronation and death remains a scholars’ puzzle. According to the Theophanes Continuatus he slipped away from his nurse and drowned in a cistern at the palace of Blachernae, and his grieving father laid out gardens on the spot. His parents buried him in a small sarcophagus of Thessalian marble in the Church of the Holy Apostles, where Constantine VII later recorded his little coffin resting beside that of his sister Maria.
