Theodora II

Theodora (AD 815 – 867). regent (r. 842–856). Married Theophilos around AD 830. Wife of Theophilos; regent 842–856; restored icon veneration. An iconophile married into an iconoclast court, she was named regent by her dying husband for their two-year-old son, with the eunuch logothete Theoktistos among her closest counsellors. She governed capably: though most of Sicily slipped away and Crete was not recovered, her diplomacy kept the empire secure against the Bulgarians and the Abbasids. For ending the second iconoclasm she is honoured as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Her son Michael III, grown fearful and resentful of her authority, deposed her and later had her confined with some of her daughters to a convent at Gastria; she outlived him, dying some time after his murder.
