Michael (AD 840 – 867). Emperor (r. 842–867). 'the Drunkard'; assassinated by Basil I; kept Eudokia Ingerina as mistress and possibly biological father of Leo VI. The mocking nickname by which he is remembered — “the Drunkard” — was the work of chroniclers writing under the Macedonian dynasty that supplanted him, but modern research has gone some way toward restoring his name, showing how much the empire’s ninth-century recovery owed to his reign. The third and traditionally last emperor of the Amorian line, he holds two records of precocity: no one bore the imperial title younger — he was only months old — and no one succeeded as senior emperor younger, at the age of two.
