Romanos IV Diogenes

Romanos (AD 1030 – 1072). Emperor (r. 1068–1071). Married Eudokia around AD 1068; they were set apart in AD 1071. Defeated and captured at Manzikert 1071; blinded and killed. A son of the general Constantine Diogenes and of the Cappadocian military aristocracy, he made his name as a frontier commander in Syria and on the Danube before the throne came to him. As emperor he set himself to reverse the army's long neglect and stem Turkish raids into Anatolia, campaigning against the Seljuks with limited success while feuding at home with the powerful Doukas family. It was the Doukai who declared him deposed while he sat a prisoner of Alp Arslan, and who defeated his forces in Cilicia after his release. He surrendered under a promise of safety that was not kept, and ended on the island of Prote in the Sea of Marmara, dying of the wounds of his blinding.
