Nikephoros Diogenes

Nikephoros (AD 1069 – 1094). co-emperor (r. 1071). Son of Romanos IV; later conspired against Alexios I and was blinded. Raised to junior emperor as an infant, he lost the position within a year when his father was overthrown. Alexios I later showed him favour and made him doux of Crete, which makes the sequel the stranger: the plot he wove in 1094 drew in numerous confidants and relatives of the emperor, among them Alexios’s own brother Adrianos. For it he was blinded — the standard Byzantine penalty for conspirators — yet he kept his life and, by Anna Komnene’s account, even his old grudge; he withdrew to his estates and gave his last years to the study of classical literature.
One of 13 people of Doukas (1006–1303) in this archive. A great civil house that took the throne between the Macedonians and the Komnenoi.
