Eudokia (AD 1021 – 1096). Empress. Married Constantine around AD 1050. Married Romanos around AD 1068; they were set apart in AD 1071. Wife of Constantine X then Romanos IV; regent 1067. A niece of Patriarch Michael Keroularios, she bore Constantine X seven children, and coins and inscriptions of his reign present her, unusually, as his partner in rule. When he died in May 1067 she took the government into her own hands — some historians count her an empress regnant. Despite a deathbed oath never to remarry, she chose the popular general Romanos Diogenes to hold back the Seljuks and, reportedly by tricking the patriarch into releasing her from the vow, married and crowned him on 1 January 1068; they had two sons. After Romanos was captured at Manzikert in 1071 she briefly ruled jointly with Michael VII, until the Caesar John Doukas forced her into a convent. She later saw to Romanos’s funeral and burial when he died in 1072, and in 1078 Nikephoros III offered to marry her, though John Doukas blocked the match.
