Constantine (AD 1006 – 1067). Emperor (r. 1059–1067). Married Eudokia around AD 1050. First Doukas emperor. A scholar at heart who could argue philosophy and theology for hours, Constantine reached the throne when the ailing Isaac Komnenos, under the influence of Michael Psellos, chose him as successor. He governed for the court bureaucracy and the church and against the army: the fifty-thousand-strong Armenian militia was dissolved just as the Seljuk Turks pressed westward, mercenaries took the place of standing troops, and the border strongholds crumbled for want of repair; he survived an assassination attempt in 1061 and the unpopularity his new taxes brought. Losses mounted around him — Byzantine Calabria fell to the Normans, Alp Arslan took the Armenian capital, Belgrade went to the Hungarians. On his deathbed he insisted the succession belong to his sons alone and bound his wife Eudokia by a vow never to remarry.
