Portrait of Castor

The mortal half of the Dioscuri and a peerless tamer of horses, Castor rode with the Argonauts and in the hunt for the Calydonian boar beside his inseparable twin. He fell in a quarrel with their cousins Idas and Lynceus, but Polydeuces would not let death divide them: by Zeus's grace the brothers alternate between the underworld and Olympus, day and day about, and shine together as the Gemini. Fathered the same night by Leda's mortal husband Tyndareus, so he is seated under Leda only. He shares his twin's gift of immortality solely on alternating days.
