Anne Stuart (1665–1714). Queen of Great Britain (r. 1702–1714). Married George of Denmark in 1683. First sovereign of a united Great Britain; none of her seventeen pregnancies produced an heir who survived her. Raised an Anglican on Charles II’s instructions despite her father’s suspected Catholicism, she became estranged from her sister Mary soon after the latter’s accession, over money, status and choice of friends. As queen she leaned on moderate Tories, closer to her own Anglicanism than the Whigs — though Whig power swelled with the War of the Spanish Succession until she purged their ministers in 1710. Her close friendship with Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, soured into political quarrel, and the duchess’s unflattering memoirs coloured Anne’s reputation until historians reassessed her in the late twentieth century. Sickly for most of her life, she was the last Stuart monarch; the crown passed, under a settlement excluding all Catholics, to the House of Hanover.
