Mary II Stuart (1662–1694). Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland (r. 1689–1694). Married William III of Orange in 1677. Reigned jointly with her Dutch husband after her father was driven out. Though both her parents became Roman Catholics, Charles II insisted that she and her sister Anne be given an Anglican upbringing, and her father’s accession made her heir presumptive — until the birth of a half-brother, later called “the Old Pretender,” helped bring on the revolution that deposed him and produced the English Bill of Rights. On the throne she mostly left decisions to her husband whenever he was in England, but with his campaigns keeping him abroad she governed by herself and showed real firmness and skill as a ruler. Smallpox killed her at thirty-two, leaving William to reign alone; the crown afterwards passed to her sister Anne.
