Chaos
Generation I · The primal void
First of everything in Hesiod's account, Chaos simply came to be — a vast gap or opening before earth, sky, or sea existed. Being a neuter noun in Greek, it is best pictured not as a deity with a face but as the genderless void itself, out of which stepped Erebus and black Night. Recorded as female for tree purposes only: the Greek word χάος is grammatically neuter, and Hesiod's Chaos is a genderless yawning gap rather than a goddess.
