Portrait of Eros

Eros is desire itself, the power that loosens the limbs and bends the good sense of gods and mortals alike. Hesiod ranks him among the very first beings, arriving in the wake of Chaos, though the better-known later tradition recasts him as the winged, arrow-carrying son of Aphrodite and Ares. Hesiod makes Eros primordial — he came to be after Chaos, not from any parent; he is seated as Chaos's child here to keep one connected tree. The later, more famous tradition makes him the son of Aphrodite and Ares.
