Gaia
Generation II · The Earth
Gaia is the Earth herself, the steady ground beneath gods and mortals and the great mother of nearly the whole divine family. Alone she brought forth Uranus the sky and Pontus the sea, and when Uranus proved cruel to her children she forged the adamant sickle and set young Cronus in ambush to overthrow him. Hesiod says Gaia came to be after Chaos, not from it — she is seated as Chaos's child here to keep one connected tree.
