Titaness of the nourishing fresh waters, wife of her brother Oceanus and mother of a family beyond counting: three thousand rivers and three thousand Oceanid daughters who tend springs, clouds, and streams. Homer makes her a foster-mother too, for Rhea entrusted the young Hera to her care while the Titan war raged. In one charming tale she refused to let the constellation of the Bear ever bathe in her waters, out of loyalty to the wronged Hera.
