Generation V · Increase of the flocks
An Oceanid nymph of Mount Cyllene in Arcadia, whose name promises the multiplying of flocks. By the Titan Atlas she became mother of the seven Pleiades, among them Maia, mother of Hermes, so that her daughters still rise together as a star cluster. One tale has the hunter Orion pursue Pleione and her girls for years, until Zeus set them in the sky where he chases them still. Not among the Oceanids Hesiod names in the Theogony; her parentage from Oceanus and Tethys rests on later sources such as Ovid and the mythographers.
