Maia, eldest and shyest of the seven Pleiades, kept to a deep cave on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia, far from the company of the gods. There Zeus came to her in secret, and she bore Hermes — the infant who slipped from his cradle on his first day to steal Apollo's cattle.
