Atlas, strongest of the sons of Iapetus, sided with the Titans in their war against Zeus and was sentenced to stand at the world's western rim, holding up the sky forever. Heracles once shouldered the burden for him while Atlas fetched the golden apples of the Hesperides — then tricked the Titan into taking it back.
