Calypso, daughter of Atlas, dwells on the remote island of Ogygia in a cave hung with vines, singing as she works her golden loom. She sheltered the shipwrecked Odysseus for seven years and offered him immortality to stay, but released him to the sea when Zeus sent Hermes with the command to let him go home.
