Born to Zeus and the shy Pleiad Maia in a mountain cave in Arcadia, Hermes wasted no time: on the day of his birth he slipped from his cradle, stole Apollo's cattle, and invented the lyre from a tortoise shell to buy his way out of trouble. Herald of the gods and patron of roads, travellers, merchants, and thieves alike, he alone passes freely between Olympus, earth, and the underworld, guiding souls on their last journey.
